چکیده

Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) was effective in reducing microfilarial densities of Brugia pahangi in Mongolian jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) when it was administered intraperitoneally at the daily dosage of 300 mg/kg of body weight either for 5 consecutive days or every 3 days for 43 days with the total of 15 doses. The latter treatment scheme seemed to be more effective than the former, suggesting that the effect was dosedependent. The DEC treatment by stomach intubation seemed to be less effective than the intraperitoneal administration of the medicine.

Eosinophil hyporesponse of jirds induced by microfilariae of Brugia pahangi.

Male jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) were inoculated sc with 100 infective larvae of Brugia pahangi. After 16 weeks, the animals were reinoculated with a comparable number of organisms. Blood eosinophil responses during the 5 weeks subsequent to this attempt to reinfect were much lower than those of comparable naive animals, while the response to a heterologous infection (Toxocara canis) was comp...

Development of a simple and convenient feeding device to infect Aedes aegypti mosquitoes with Brugia pahangi microfilariae derived from the peritoneal cavity of Mongolian jirds

It has become difficult in recent years to conduct the direct feeding of mosquitoes on animals because of ethical considerations related to animal experimentation. Thus, the artificial feeding of mosquitoes on blood meals is an important technique in studies on the oral infection of mosquitoes to agents. Since Rutledge et al. (1964) devised the artificial membrane-feeding technique, several art...

Down regulation of macrophage activation in Brugia pahangi-infected jirds (Meriones unguiculatus).

The macrophage is a major component of the inflammatory response induced by lymphatic tissue-dwelling filariae. Intraperitoneal (i.p.) infections with Brugia pahangi in Mongolian gerbils, or jirds (Meriones unguiculatus), induce a peritoneal inflammatory response characterized by accumulation of numerous macrophages and fewer eosinophils. This inflammatory response is associated with the releas...

Removal of Wolbachia from Brugia pahangi is closely linked to worm death and fecundity but does not result in altered lymphatic lesion formation in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus).

Approximately 30 years ago, researchers reported intracellular bacteria in filarial nematodes. These bacteria are relatives of the arthropod symbiont Wolbachia and occur in many filarial nematodes, including Brugia pahangi and Brugia malayi. Wolbachia bacteria have been implicated in a variety of roles, including filaria development and fecundity and the pathogenesis of lymphatic lesions associ...
